Capoeira (Portuguese pronunciation: [kaˈpwejɾɐ]) is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, music, and dance.

Batizado (literally baptism in Portuguese, and borrowed from the religious tradition) is normally an annual event for a Capoeira group in a region or country. Batizados are large events and are very important for the group organizing it. It is the point in the year where the new members will be baptized officially into the group and receive their first cords (think coloured belts like Judo)and where the other members depending on their progress will get a new one.

We will probably take kites with us and end up on Streatham Common once all is over

Re: Hilly Fields Community Day, 17th July 2010
So how was Hillyfields? I trust you all took pictures and are busy writing your postcards to the Windjammer. I understand my brother was being his usual awkward self and tangling with others!!

We had an awful day. All set up to leave for Streatham, turned the key and click! tried again..... click Yes youve guessed it my car battery had failed. Barbara's car was behind mine so I couldnt use that for a jump start. So B went next door to ask the neighbour for a jump start from his car. Car started ok wilh that assistance and we drove off to spend a nice hour sitting in the carpark of the nearest battery place waiting for assistance. My car is happy now with a new battery that works but we never made it to Streatham

We took our picnic to Wye downs and had a nice session flying there. Wind was quite fierce so most kites we had with us were being overpowered. We had a break then went back on the hill for a quick blast with my Prism Nexus that was really noisy in the strong breeze. A family who had a couiple of cheap plastic diamonds seemed to be having problems but left the hill before we could assist. It started to spit with rain so we packed up and headed back to the car. In the carpark the family with the diamonds were assembling an Xkites dragon so we just had to go and take a look. Lucky for them we did as were struggling to work out where to connect the streamers and line. We were able to assist and dad & son went off to the hillside to fly the dragon while I showed the wife that the line to the diamond kites should be attached to the bridle rather than the bottom of the spine. No one had taken the time to explain when the bought the kites so they had no idea how to attach the flying line. Suffice it to say we left them with one diamond correctly built and demonstrated as flying ok for use as a pattern for when they untangled the other. Also told them to look us up and come and say hello at KKF next event.

Nice one Mike. Afraid we were too busy bunging assorted fauna, and tangling with your brother to take any pictures. The wind was "interesting", but the day stayed dry and bright. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

what a good day out, dont know about the other guys but I was knackered.
Ray went awol for about 1 hour 30 to retrieve one of his kites.
Introduced about a dozen kids to kite flying by loaning out some easy flyers, ended up selling 7 kites.

Wind was difficult upto about 100ft but over that it was ok.
A few tangles when the wind changed direction.

A lot of laughing ankle biters chasing teddy bears round the field
Organisers happy, council happy and parents very happy and we left with smiles.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Mike - it was very interesting. Hope your daughter got her grading although what a great pity that you and Barbara didn't make it. (Sorry I haven't replied earlier - computer like car, lets you down when needed most).

Have sent a postcard re Slideaway where Heather, Len, Barry & I were at the same time as Hillyfields was being held.

Yes Sarah graded ok and is now a Green Point Yellow whatever that means. She said that she was rubbish but was still upgraded so cant have been that bed.

Her posting on Facebook said " Sarah Palmer is now a green point yellow! (although still haven't learnt not to get kicked in the head! Doh! )"

Must teach her to duck!

To all the guys that helped out at the Hillyfields event I have just had this message sent by Pat Cooper:

'I must thank you for a very good event at Hillyfields Community park.

Everyone is talking about it. Even now'

*****

Pat Cooper is looking at the possibilty of using us at another venue in Medway Towns sometime in the future. :
